Destination DC Announces Shirley Del Carpio as New Director of Sales

WASHINGTON, DC – Destination DC, the official destination marketing organization for Washington, DC, today announced the promotion of Shirley Del Carpio to Director of Sales.

Shirley brings over 20 years of experience in hospitality and convention sales, with a proven track record of consistently surpassing goals and leading high-performing teams. She joined Destination DC in 2021 as a Senior National Account Director and has been integral to the organization’s success.

Her career includes leadership roles with Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott. She earned recognition as a Hyatt Elite Performer in the top 10 percent worldwide and a Hyatt Super Elite Performer in the top one percent worldwide. Industry peers describe her as a consummate sales leader, mentor and advocate with a reputation for accountability, creativity and relationship-building.

“Shirley has played a pivotal role in elevating Washington, DC’s presence in the meetings industry,” said Elliott L. Ferguson, president and CEO, Destination DC. “Throughout her time at DDC, she has not only delivered exceptional results but has also grown as a leader whose influence is felt across departments. Her ability to mentor colleagues, strengthen cross-team collaboration and shape initiatives that enhance convention center productivity demonstrates the depth of her impact. Shirley’s leadership, relationships and
passion for this city will drive even greater results as she steps into this new role.”

As Director of Sales, Shirley will lead the convention sales team to achieve and exceed revenue goals, develop strategies to position Washington, DC as a top global meetings destination and strengthen partnerships with Events DC, hotels and industry stakeholders.

Her leadership will also help advance key departmental priorities, including elevating the city’s competitive advantage through the “There’s Only One DC” brand for meetings and supporting long-term convention growth across diversified market segments. This includes meeting the evolving needs of emerging sectors—such as technology, corporate, pharmaceutical and policy-driven industries—that fuel DC’s growth as a leading meetings hub. Through these efforts, she will continue driving momentum for Washington, DC’s position as a premier destination for large-scale events and citywide impact.

“Shirley is a respected leader with a deep understanding of our clients and our community,” said Melissa A. Riley, SVP, Convention Sales and Services. “She leads with purpose and authenticity, and she inspires teams to perform at their best. Her natural ability to build meaningful relationships—both within our organization and across the broader industry—strengthens every partnership we cultivate. I am excited to see her guide our sales division into its next chapter of growth.”

Shirley said the role carries personal meaning. “I built my career in this region and proudly call Washington, DC home, so representing this city is an honor. Every meeting here has the potential to foster important conversations and drive impact. Leading the team that brings our destination to life for clients is a responsibility I value. This opportunity allows me to give back to the city that has shaped my professional journey and contribute to its continued growth and success."
